Project description
FixIt is a mobile app that connects homeowners in Lagos with verified, reliable handymen. It eliminates the stress of finding home repair help through transparent profiles, real reviews, and a secure, upfront booking and payment system.
Challenge: Finding a reliable plumber, electrician, or carpenter in a busy city like Lagos is a frustrating process. Homeowners often rely on word-of-mouth, leading to a lack of trust, inconsistent pricing, and no way to verify the quality of work before hiring. The process is stressful and time-consuming.
The challenge
To create a trustworthy, and simple mobile experience that empowers users to discover, filter, book, and pay for verified professional handymen with complete transparency. The goal is to turn a chaotic process into a seamless digital service.
Understanding the user
Home emergencies are stressful for everyone, irrespective of income or profession. My focus was on creating a safe, transparent bridge between people who need help and skilled professionals willing to provide it.
Key Pain Points:
Trust Deficit: "Who is this stranger entering my home, and are they qualified?"
Price Uncertainty: "Why is the price always a surprise at the end of the job?"
Booking Friction: "I need to schedule this for a specific time, not just 'whenever they are free'."
Actions taken
A. Discovery & Building Trust
The home screen is designed for speed and confidence. I used clear, scannable categories to lower cognitive load. To address the trust issue immediately, I included a "Recommended for you" section featuring top-rated pros with high-quality profile photos.
Key Features:
Verified Badges: Prominently displayed on profiles to provide instant reassurance.
Smart Filters: Allowing users to quickly narrow down results by specific service type (e.g., "Drainage," "Installation") and price range.

B. Making an Informed Decision
A handyman's profile serves as their digital resume. I designed this page to answer every question a user might have before they commit.
Key Feature: Highlighting a clear 4.0+ rating, total review count, and detailed, read-able reviews from other users.

C. Closing the Loop: Booking & Payment
This flow is where the core problem of logistics is solved. It transforms a vague request into a confirmed appointment.
Key Features:
Precise Scheduling: Users select a specific date and a 2-hour time slot, giving them control over their day.
Transparent Pricing: The "Review & Pay" screen breaks down the subtotal and processing fees before payment, eliminating end-of-job price surprises.
Confirmation: A clear success modal provides the final psychological reward and assurance that help is on the way.

Visual Style
I chose a clean, sophisticated aesthetic to differentiate FixIt from the cluttered and chaotic nature of the traditional handyman market. The use of ample white space, professional typography, and a soft blue accent color creates a feeling of calm, professionalism, and reliability.
Reflection
A beautiful interface is only the beginning. The real value lies in the logic of the user flow—anticipating questions (like "What's included?") and providing answers at the exact right moment.
For a future iteration, I would explore adding a "Live Tracking" feature to show the handyman's real-time location en route, further enhancing trust and reducing anxiety for the user.
